Hudson Valley Lumber traces its roots to a passion for quality wood and craftsmanship that began decades ago.

After graduating from the Culinary Institute of America in 1978 and a career as a chef in New York City, Gary discovered a new calling in fine woodworking. Moving to Virginia, he honed his skills working with a furniture maker, crafting unique pieces that quickly gained recognition –Winning first prize at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts craft show for 3 chairs he built out of sticks.

One cool spring morning in the mountains of Virginia when the sap is running and the Maple is the whitest, Gary went to buy some wood from a local sawmill.  When the boards came off the mill the Sawyer noticed that something was different about it.  It was Curly Maple!  The Sawyer said he couldn’t sell it as plain Hard White Maple, so he sold it to Gary at a discounted price of 25 cents per board foot.  At that moment, Gary made the decision to source wood from quality suppliers and sell it at a fair price.

Eventually, Gary, his family, and his wood relocated to Kingston, NY, where he continued refining his craft – moving from furniture repair to custom cabinetry. When the need for distinctive mouldings arose, Gary invested in his own machinery to create custom profiles locally. This marked the beginning of SAW Moulding, known for exceptional quality and unique designs featured in landmarks like The Plaza Hotel and The Museum of Natural History.

A Father & Son Family Business

In 2024, Gary and his son Emmet partnered to launch Hudson Valley Lumber, building on this deep heritage of craftsmanship and quality. Today, they carry an extensive inventory of premium hardwood lumber, S4S boards, primed flat stock, mouldings and hardwood plywood – all curated with the same care and expertise that Gary has championed for over 40 years.
